At JCE, we believe in nurturing talent and investing in the future of our industry. Our apprenticeship program is a cornerstone of our business, providing young people with the skills, experience, and opportunities they need to build rewarding careers and be professionals in electrical engineering and beyond.

JCE has a long history of supporting apprentices. Our approach is simple but effective: we consistently maintain a cycle of first, second, third, and fourth year apprentices, ensuring that we always have a pipeline of skilled professionals in development. Over the years, many of our apprentices have gone on to become integral members of our team, while others have pursued exciting careers elsewhere, often returning to work with us in different capacities.

Our commitment to apprenticeships stems from the understanding that the industry thrives on skilled tradespeople. Without structured training and development, we risk a shortage of qualified electricians, engineers, and technical specialists. That’s why we prioritise training and mentorship, ensuring that our apprentices not only gain technical knowledge but also hands-on experience that prepares them for long-term success.

Investing in Talent

One of the common misconceptions about apprenticeships is that they are costly for employers. However, we have found the investment to be invaluable. With college tuition funded and first-year apprentice wages set at accessible levels, the real value comes from the long-term benefits: developing skilled employees who know our business inside and out and maintaining competencies in the manufacture of hazardous areas, ensuring the safety of industry, plant and life.

Our apprentices are not just trainees; they are the future of our company. By the time they complete their programs, they have a deep understanding of our operations, making them highly valuable to our team.

Meeting the Demand for Skilled Professionals

The demand for apprentices fluctuates, and we’ve noticed shifts in interest over the years. Last year, we saw fewer applications, but this year, we were inundated with impressive candidates. This renewed interest is encouraging, showing that young people still see value in hands-on, practical careers.

While we typically focus on electrical apprenticeships, we are also exploring opportunities in engineering. With growing interest from candidates looking to develop engineering expertise, we are working to create pathways for apprentices to move into these roles, further strengthening our technical capabilities.

Of course, like any training program, apprenticeships come with their challenges. One of the biggest hurdles is navigating the college system, as apprentices must complete their modern apprenticeship qualifications through external institutions. We’ve worked with multiple training providers, each with their own processes and challenges, from securing timely coursework to managing communication. Despite these obstacles, we remain committed to ensuring our apprentices receive the best possible training and support.

A Culture of Mentorship and Progression

At JCE, apprentices don’t just learn a trade – they become part of a team. We pair each apprentice with an experienced mentor, ensuring they have the guidance and support needed to thrive. This structured approach helps them integrate into the workplace, develop their skills, and build confidence in their abilities.

The progression opportunities are vast. From apprentice to time-served electrical fitter, to technical specialist, engineer, or even management, the possibilities are endless. By starting their careers with us, apprentices open doors to a future filled with opportunity.

Looking Ahead

As we welcome our newest apprentice this year, we look forward to continuing our tradition of training the next generation of skilled professionals. Our commitment to apprenticeships is unwavering, and we will keep investing in the people who drive our business forward.

If you’re considering an apprenticeship in electrical engineering or related fields, JCE offers an exciting and supportive environment to kickstart your career. Stay tuned as we share stories from some of our apprentices, past and present, to highlight the incredible journeys that start at JCE.
