JCE designed and delivered a compact, containerised hybrid power capsule to provide clean, reliable, low-noise energy for the Discovery Zone at the Tall Ships Races Aberdeen 2025. Integrating battery storage with solar, wind and diesel backup in a plug-and-play unit, the system was rapidly deployed and operated with minimal disruption. By allowing the battery and renewables to carry most of the load, fuel consumption and emissions were cut by around 90%, with noise reduced significantly, ensuring resilient, environmentally friendly power throughout the four-day event.

The Challenge

The Tall Ships Races Aberdeen 2025 required reliable power for vendor stalls in Castlegate for the Discovery Zone, one of the city’s most historic public areas. With over 400,000 visitors expected at the main event, traditional diesel generators would create significant noise and emissions in this heritage setting, conflicting with the event’s sustainability goals and the expectations of a modern, environmentally-conscious audience.

Event organisers needed a solution that would:

  • Deliver reliable power throughout the four-day event with zero downtime
  • Minimise noise pollution in a densely populated public space
  • Significantly reduce diesel consumption and associated emissions
  • Install quickly with minimal disruption to the heritage site
  • Demonstrate sustainable technology to a public audience

The Solution

JCE Energy, JCE Group’s Renewables division deployed a Transportable Hybrid Power Module, a pre-assembled system integrating battery storage, solar generation, wind input, and diesel backup within a modular steel frame. Developed in partnership with Norco (battery systems) and James Aiken Engineering (structural frame), the Aberdeen-built unit was designed for rapid deployment.

Key Features:

  • Hybrid Architecture: Battery storage carried the majority of electrical load, with solar and wind supplementing energy supply. Diesel generator activated only for backup/peak demand, drastically reducing runtime and fuel consumption of 90%
  • Rapid Deployment: Pre-assembled module delivered by truck and commissioned in approximately 4 hours—critical for tight event schedules
  • Smart Controls: Remote monitoring system enabled real-time oversight of battery state-of-charge, energy flows, and generator status
  • Weather Resilience: System performed reliably despite variable Scottish weather (sun, overcast, rain), with battery smoothing renewable input fluctuations
  • Industrial Certification: ATEX/IECEx Zone 2 certified for tall ships a safe area-marine duty has been deployed, ensuring quality standards suitable for both hazardous-area and public applications

An information stand adjacent to the installation educated visitors about hybrid power technology, with dozens of people stopping daily and several engaging in detailed conversations with the JCE team.

The Results

Environmental Performance

  • Zero downtime across four days of operation
  • Significant noise reduction diesel-only generators-30 dB
  • Reduced emissions– CO₂/NOx-90%
  • Minimal diesel consumption with battery carrying majority load

Strategic Impact

  • Proof-of-concept for hybrid power in heritage/event settings
  • Enhanced JCE brand as sustainable energy innovator beyond industrial sector

Public Engagement

  • Dozens of daily visitors to information stand
  • Several in-depth conversations per day with JCE team
  • High visibility demonstration to 400,000+ attendees
  • Strong interest from event organisers and local businesses

Technical Validation

  • Battery effectively carried base load throughout operations
  • Solar/wind inputs provided measurable contribution despite variable weather
  • Remote monitoring enabled proactive system management
  • Installation faster than anticipated

Successful partnership model with Norco and James Aiken Engineering

“Deploying our Transportable Hybrid Power Module at the Tall Ships is a practical demonstration of how hybrid systems can support public events in a cleaner, quieter and more efficient way. By reducing reliance on diesel generation, we’re delivering meaningful environmental benefits while ensuring a dependable power supply for stallholders and visitors.”

— Marco Gheza, General Manager, JCE

Looking Forward

The successful deployment has positioned JCE Energy’s Transportable Hybrid Power Module for expanded applications across multiple sectors:

  • Public events & festivals — music, cultural celebrations, sporting events
  • Heritage sites — historic locations with environmental/acoustic restrictions
  • Remote construction — off-grid locations requiring reliable, low-emission power
  • Film & television production — quiet, clean power for location shoots
  • Emergency response — rapid-deployment power for disaster relief

As sustainability expectations evolve and regulatory requirements tighten, JCE’s hybrid technology offers event organisers and site operators a scalable, commercially viable alternative to conventional diesel generators—bringing renewable and battery-hybrid solutions to diverse applications where clean, quiet, reliable power is essential.
